Welcome Welcome to the website of the Department of Surgery at the University of Missouri - Kansas City! Our goal is to provide you with information about our department and residency program in the hopes of helping you select a program that is right for you. The mission of the UMKC General Surgery Residency is to provide quality training that will prepare each of our residents to enter private or academic practice, or to seek further subspecialty training. With that in mind, our surgical faculty is highly skilled and accomplished in all major subspecialties in general surgery. Our residents work at Truman Medical Center, an urban core hospital, as well as Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City, a tertiary, private teaching hospital. Both are Level I Trauma Centers. We also include rotations at Truman Medical Center - Lakewood, a county hospital; the Kansas City Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Children's Mercy Hospital. These facilities, coupled with our nationally-recognized Shock-Trauma Research Center, provide our residents a great breadth of experience with a strong emphasis in Surgical Critical Care. We seek strong, committed residents who not only wish to become excellent clinical surgeons, but also share our lifelong dedication to learning. The application process for our program is extremely competitive. Our program now accepts five categorical residents at the PGY-1 level beginning 2010-2011, and previously graduated four Chief Residents each year. We hope you will take the time to tour our web site, learn what our program has to offer, and examine it more carefully. If you have other questions, please feel free to contact our department.
Thanks for your time. We look forward to hearing from you.
Stanley Augustin, M.D., F.A.C.S.
